who needs it?
Portable appliance testing or pat testing, is the testing of any electrical appliance which consumes electricity and or is plugged in to a supply, wether it is 240volt, 110volt or three phase
Portable appliance:
An appliance of less than 18kg in mass that is intended to be moved whilst in operation or an appliance which can easily be moved from one place to another, e.g. vacuum cleaner, toaster, food mixer, etc.
Movable equipment (transportable):
18 kg or less in mass and not fixed, e.g. electric fire. Or equipment with wheels, castors or other means to facilitate movement by the operator as required to perform its intended use, e.g. air conditioning unit Hand Held equipment or appliances This is portable equipment intended to be held in the hand during normal use, e.g. hair dryer
Stationary equipment or appliances
This equipment has a mass exceeding 18kg and is not provided with a carrying handle, e.g. refrigerator
Fixed Equipment/appliances
This equipment or an appliance which is fastened to a support or otherwise secured in a specific location, e.g. bathroom heater Appliances/equipment for building in This equipment is intended to be installed in a prepared recess such as a cupboard or similar. In general, equipment for building in does not have exposure on all sides because one or more of the sides, additional protection against electrical shock is provided by the surroundings, e.g. built in electric cooker
Information technology equipment
Information technology equipment includes electrical business equipment such as computers and mains powered telecommunications equipment, and other equipment for general business use, such as mail processing machines, VDU's photo-copiers.
Each item will under go a series of tests
Visual Inspection:
the equipment is checked for signs of any visible damage such as cracked plugs or split cables.
Earth Continuity:
equipment is tested to ensure it has a satisfactory earth connection.
Insulation:
equipment is tested to ensure the insulation of the equipment is satisfactory.
Leakage:
equipment is tested to ensure that the leakage back to earth is minimal.
Polarity:
To check the wiring is the correct way round.
All tests are recorded and logged, all tested items will have a sticker attatched as a result and record on the appliance, you will recieve a printed report, with certificate and copy on cd, we will also hold a copy of the report and results and remind you of retest dates,
Repairs:
Small repairs will be carried out free of charge on tested uints this will also include free re test, small repairs are classed as
Fuse replacement to correct spec, Rewire of existing plug, Supply of new plug, re wire of cable to unit (unless replaced),
Other repairs will be quoted on at request, repairs carred out by ourselves will be re tested F.O.C
